Last Days

A lazy start to the day, ie a sleep in and late breakfast.

A peek outside! To our surprise it was super-quiet, ghost town like.  There is a law in Germany about what can and cannot be done on Sundays.  Bottomline: shops/markets are closed and people are having family-time. Restaurants were open.

We thought we would try our hand a tram-adventuring.  So we caught a tram to the end of the line.  Unfortunately, there was thing much there.  At first we walked through some residential areas.  Lots of units.  Then it was commercial/industrial.  Ho-hum.  Made our way back to the tram.

A moment of excitement on the way though… we walked past the Bundesarchiv Militararchiv (German Army Archive).  Sadly, it was closed.  FYI, it is a non-descript building with several large non-descript storage sheds.

Cool crest, eh!

When in Freiburg and you have doubts about what to do.  Then you go to the town square (it’s not really a square its more a triangle).  The square was also quiet but at least a ew restaurants were open and a busker was at work.  We decided it was time for coffee and cake.  In fact the cake was a Apfel Kuchen.  Karen described it well: ‘part apple pie and part apple crumble’.  It went down a treat with a good MilchKaffee.

Bit of a ghost town… even in the main square.

Apfel Kuchen.  Das ist gut!

That was enough excitement for the day.  It was back to the hotel and time to prepare for the return journey.

Monday morning!  Travel day!!  The plan was to catch a series of trains that would take us from Freiburg to Geneva.  Sounds simple, eh!

First surprise, the very first train is running late which means a complete new schedule of trains.  The upside, is that this sort of things seems a Mormon occurrence because the Deutsche Bahn (Train people) are really quick and calm at developing a new plan.  The first train was pleasant and not crowded.  The second train had people and luggage crammed in.  Fortunately, there was not emergency. Third train, the herd started to thin out.  One passenger spoke on her phone for the whole two hours… loudly.  The last train was not crowded and a pleasant trip into Geneva.

Bullet train coming into station.

There must have been an Hasidic Jewish conference in Geneva.  They were everywhere at the airport.  The Hasidic Jewish are the folks with the black coats, black Homburg style hats, beards and temple curls. Interesting!!

We are now ensconced in our overnight hotel and ready to come home.  We have had a great time but are looking forward to being home with family and friends.
